The Cloud

Words of wisdom from Fake Steve:

“Then he starts going on again about the cloud. The cloud, the cloud, the cloud. It's all you ever hear when you hang out with this guy. I was like, Dude, I'm so sick of hearing about the damn cloud. Instead of talking about it why don't you idiots go build the friggin thing if it's so magical and all-powerful and important? He says they're well on their way, farther than anyone knows, and in ten or twenty years there will be only a handful of service providers and if you're bummed by the kind of vendor lock-in we used to see from IBM in the old days or that we see from Microsoft today, just wait till you see the lock-in that these global compute utilities will be able to get. Eric says this is going to be the golden age of cornholing. It will make the old Bell System crooks look like amateurs. The guys running the cloud will control everything: phone, data, video, television, movies, music.”

*ha* Seriously great quote! I haven't read the context but I'm assuming it's about Google, Apple and maybe even Microsoft and I agree that it's a completely frighting thing.

I think of how Google's cloud already dominates, it knows all your e-mail via gmail, it has all your documents, it knows where you're going and when with Google Calendar and it knows everything you're into with all your search history. Who needs a phone tap these days when seriously just tap into the Google cloud and you *own* someone.

Same thing with Apple and media, frighting as hell! All your media purchases locked up in an iPod or AppleTV or iTunes, only able to play it on what Apple allows, no licensing of it's FairPlay DRM, pretty much a complete media lockdown and they can call all the shots since they own such a massive majority of the media industry they might as well own it.

And Microsoft! Well... actually, they're pretty much harmless these days. Sure they dominate the OS but who cares, everyone just fires up a web browser anyway to get to Google or installs iTunes for their iPod or they just install it on their MacBook with Bootcamp. So nevermind, Microsoft isn't scary because they don't own any of my information, not in the way that Google and Apple do. Scary times.
